He had conducted his research in highly specialized areas of geological engineering, including the study of the mechanism and prevention of rock burst and large deformation in underground engineering, the theory of epigenetic time-dependent structures in rock masses and how these structures may affect underground engineering, advancing our ability to predict and protect against landslides, advancing geological forecasting techniques for tunnels under complicated geological conditions, and the study of damage control and response to tunnels under earthquake and high geostress conditions. This work had resulted in at least 171 peer-reviewed scientific articles, 6 book chapters, and 34 papers at national and international conferences. At the time that his case was filed, these publications been cited at least 1,553 times by independent and leading researchers from prestigious institutions and organizations around the world, indicating the major significance of his work. He had also conducted at least 84 paper reviews for journals in his field.
